My mum and I were talking about handball today on the phone. Now for those who don't know me yet: I'm from Germany. Handball is pretty big in Germany. Okay, maybe not as big as football, but that can change. Lol JK. Anyways now I live in the UK, and I realized how unimportant handball is here ... some don't even know what it is!!! And of course, no handball matches are shown on TV here. Now my mum used to play handball, and my sister is playing as well. So naturally, even though I myself can't play it, I have been growing up with it and I really have come to like it. Is there someone else on this site who is as weird as me and can relate? Please? Lol. I don't mind football either but, as I already said, I grew up with that sport.
Handball is huge in Iceland, especially since we have a pretty good national team (won silver at the olympics). We have 3 points in the final round of the European championships in Austria so we still, theoretically, have a chance of winning, though anything from first to fifth place would be awesome.
I saw Germany lost to France so they do not hve a chance at a medal this year. Weird, because they used to be the best handball team about 6 or 7 years ago, now France is, without a doubt.
The UK is actually training up its own national handball team for the olympics. They chose a bunch of rugby players, hired a famous coach and send the group to Denmark on intensive 2-year training camp, they promised to have a decent team at the 2012 olympics, I'd be very curious to see how they'll do.
Germany won three years ago, the world championship.
Shit, they lost? My parents were watching it. That's gutting!!! I somehow don't like the fact that France is better.
and yeah I think Germany played against Iceland three years ago in the world cup as well, so yeah I know that you have quite a good team. No offence but I won't be happy if they are in front of Germany. *grins*
For the european Championship news:
Germany ended up in 10th place, they have a very young and transitional team, so they were not expected to win medals, but tenth place seems a lot lower than they aimed for, so they are not very happy.
The final 4 nations are Iceland and France and Croatia and Polland (in order of games played).
My prediction for the top 4 will be France, Croatia, Iceland, Polland.
We Icelanders have not managed to beat the French team in almost 10 years, but we've managed to beat Polland a few times and we shoulod have beat Croatia last week when we played in the group stage, but they managed to tie the game in the last minute.
Austria did very well and I think laced in 6th place .. way better than Germany, ouch.
Ouch indeed. Well, beat France will ya? I'd hate to see them win again. I'm sad for Germany but oh well. They'll win the world cup next year again. *grins*
